The Intramural Open at Fundy CrossFit

Each year, everyone that registers for the Open here at Fundy CrossFit comes together and are placed on a Team (ideally 15+ people per team). The Teams are made up of groups of people that mostly attend the same Class together so you’ll know all your teammates. These Teams then compete over a 3 week period for points to capture the Intramural Cup!

There are LOTs of ways to earn points for your Team. We tweak these year to year, but some examples are exactly what you’d see in a competition: the best scores, times, and/or weights lifted will earn points. Additionally, completing the annual Judges Course, working on some weaknesses leading up to the Open (GOAT Days), trying out an old Open WOD, and the earlier you register for the Open, the more points you’ll earn!

During the Open, you can gain points from participating in Throwdowns, getting a PR on a repeated Open WOD, demonstrating a new  skill in the Open, getting your first “X” in the Open, and showing up with your Team all at once!

Yes, it’s a world-wide competition that tests your skills, abilities and fitness, but it’s much more about coming together with the people you bust your tail with every day and challenge yourself a little more!

We’ll see you there!

1-POINT ACTIVITES

SUBMIT A SCORE FOR AN OPEN WORKOUT

Submit your score on the games.crossfit.com website before the deadline each week. The deadline is 9PM on Mondays following the workout release (Thursdays, 4PM). Even if the Athlete completed the workout but the score was not submitted, a point will not be awarded.

24.1 released at 4:00PM Feb 29, 2024 and needs to be submitted by 9:00PM Mar 4, 2024

NOTE: If an athlete has participated in a Throwdown and does not submit their score, they forfeit all points in that Throwdown

ANSWER TRIVIA QUESTIONS

During each week, and for each Friday and Saturday session, a CrossFit Open Trivia question will be presented to all athletes participating in the Open. Coming up with the right answer will earn their team a point. The question is asked in-person during the sessions and teams will have a 1 minute clock to submit an answer. Any members of a Team can collaborate and come up with their answer.

Trivia question topics are going to stick to any of the Opens from 2011-2023. Now go brush up on the old Open Leaderboards and Open Workout history!

DEMONSTRATE A MOVEMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME

Earn a point for your team by demonstrating a movement you’ve (a) never done before (eg – first ever Toes to Bar, Muscle Up, etc.) or (b) never done in the Open before (eg – over the last year(s) you’ve gained a skill like Toes to Bar, Muscle Ups, etc.). The movements available for a point will be announced prior to the Friday session.

NOTE: If an athlete has demonstrated a movement for the first time and does not submit their score, they will forfeit this bonus point.

TOP 3 MALE AND FEMALE SCORES

The top 3 Male Scores and top 3 Female Scores will receive a point for their team based on the broad age groups of Over 40 years old and Under 40 years old. Additionally, these top scores will be awarded by Workout Level: Rx, Scaled, and Foundations. Each week, there are potentially 48 points to collect in these categories!

3-POINT ACTIVITIES

HIGHEST TOTAL TEAM REPS

If the Teams are evenly split:

The highest total reps accumulated by all athletes on a team will be awarded 3 points.

Total reps are tallied from every athlete on a team, regardless of Workout Level.

If the Teams are uneven:

The highest average reps by all athletes on a team will be awarded 3 points.

NOTE: Teams with individuals that do not submit a score will still be included in the denominator.

TEAM MAX PARTICIPATION

There are two official sessions for the 2024 Open: Fridays from 5-7pm and Saturdays from 10:30am-12:00pm. The team with the most people participating in a session, as an athlete, will receive 3 points. Three points will be available per session. In the event of a tie between 2 or more teams, the points will be split.

PR A PREVIOUS OPEN WOD

Each year the Open potentially features a workout that was done in a previous year. Any athlete surpassing their previous best Open WOD Score will receive 3 points for their team. Their previous score must be a submitted score on a historical games.crossfit.com Leaderboard.

TRAVEL WOD

We do not want you to miss the whole Open because you’re travelling. There is a likely a CrossFit gym in the location you’re travelling to and if you contact them (give them a week+ heads up), you can drop in and complete the Open workout. This will earn 3 points for your Team. Travelling to our nearest CrossFit neighbour, CrossFit Quispamsis, will not be eligible for these points.

THROWDOWNS

A Throwdown occurs when two or three people, all from different teams, compete against one another to see who gets the best score in an Open WOD.

Specifically:

    • Throwdowns can have two people or three people
    • Athletes can only participate in one Throwdown per Open WOD
    • Athletes must do the WOD in the same session/heat
    • Athletes must be doing the same version of the WOD (Rx, Scaled, Foundations, Adaptive)
    • All athletes in a Throwdown must be from different teams
    • Throwdowns must be each athlete’s first WOD attempt
    • Throwdowns can be any mix of male/female
    • NEW: For determining the winner of a max lift between male/female Throwdowns, the formula Female Wt. = Male Wt. x 0.7 will be used. This is the typical factor when determining loads for workouts. Whichever number is larger, will be awarded the point.
    • Blind Throwdowns are binding UNLESS the athletes have to change their Workout Level
    • Two-part Open WODs are worth twice as many points
